🛑 Switch technical/administrative blocking procedure
The .CH registry (SWITCH) may temporarily block a domain — preventing transfers, updates or technical changes — under several circumstances, even when SWITCH is not directly part of the related dispute. A domain may be administratively or technically blocked when:
- A Swiss court, arbitration tribunal, criminal authority or administrative authority issues a binding order.
- A specialist appointed by the .CH dispute resolution service instructs SWITCH to block the domain.
- A third party has formally initiated legal or dispute-resolution proceedings (for example a conciliation request, court action or SWITCH DRS case) seeking deletion or transfer of the domain.
In addition to freezing transfers and updates, authorities may also order the removal or replacement of name servers (technical blocking).
SWITCH may also technically block and administratively lock a domain if there is a justified suspicion of phishing or malware abuse. In such cases:
- Name server assignments may be removed (taking the domain offline).
- Traffic to the domain may be redirected to an analysis or information page to identify affected users and investigate the misuse.
• A Server delete prohibited, Server transfer prohibited, Server update prohibited and other server statuses will be set on a .CH domain during administrative or technical blocking.
• The registrant must communicate directly with SWITCH via email to have the imposed lock lifted.
• If the registrant does not correct the data within the timeframe indicated by the registry, the domain may be suspended or deleted.
- 1
- The registry will contact the registrant directly (using the registrant email address) regarding the administrative or technical blocking imposed on the domain.
- 2
- The registrant must work directly with the registry via email to have the lock lifted, following SWITCH’s instructions.
- 3
- Once the registry confirms that the lock is lifted, contact our support department through email if the resulting Server delete prohibited, Server transfer prohibited or Server update prohibited statuses are not removed automatically.
