Setup vanity nameservers for Premium DNS-zones

With Realtime Register Premium DNS-services you're able to set vanity nameservers and use hostnames of your own choosing to brand the DNS service when desired. To setup vanity nameservers, the host must be created and supporting records provisioned in the DNS zone of your domain. To ensure proper operation of your DNS zones make sure the following configuration is executed carefully.

To execute these steps you need:

  • Control over the domain under which the hostnames are created
  • Control of the DNS zone of the domain under which the hostnames are created
  • To substitute the example hostnames ns1.yourname.com and ns1.yourname.com with your chosen hostnames
  • Keep the IP records as specified in this document
1
Add A / AAAA records to the zone containing the name server hostnames.(e.g. yourname.com)
ns1.yourname.com. IN A 		192.174.68.15
ns1.yourname.com. IN AAAA 	2001:67c:1bc::15
ns2.yourname.com. IN A 		176.97.158.15
ns2.yourname.com. IN AAAA	2001:67c:10b8::15

If the DNS zone of your domain is hosted by Realtime Register you can use the steps below to update the zone trough our Portal. If the DNS-zone of your domain is not managed with Realtime Register, contact the support department of the registrar that manages your domain's DNS zone for instructions

2
Create host object for the hostnames with the IPv4 and IPv6 addresses (e.g. ns1.yourname.com & ns2.yourname.com)
Host 1:
    A / IP v4: 192.174.68.15

    AAAA / IPv6: 2001:67c:1bc::15

Host 2:
    A / IP v4: 176.97.158.15

    AAAA / IPv6: 2001:67c:10b8::15

If the domain is registered by Realtime Register you can use the steps below to create the hosts trough our Portal. If the domain is not managed with Realtime Register, contact the support department of the registrar that manages your domain for instructions to setup the host objects with the above IP-adresses.

Configure A / AAAA records for zone hosted by Realtime Register

1
Navigate to the Zone overview page in our portal, search for your domain and open it. In case the zone does not exist at all, you can create a new zone with the nameserver hosts and point them to the IP-addresses outlined below

Important

If the zone does not exist it is not hosted by Realtime Register.

If you wish to move this zone to Realtime Register, instructions to create a Premium DNS-zone can be found Create a Premium DNS-zone knowledge base article. Make sure to copy any existing records form your current DNS provider to the new zone.

2
Click the Update action under Records/Template and add the below records to the zone

Important

You can only change records for zones that are not linked to a master or template. If a template is linked you can decouple the template to manage the records for this zone directly. If a master is linked you need to make the changes to the DNS records on the master server.

Name Type Content TTL
ns1.yourname.com
A 192.174.68.15

Using your vanity nameservers

That's it, you've now setup nameserver hostnames and hosts objects for a domain in your Realtime Register account you wish to use as vanity nameservers for use with the Realtime Register premium DNS-services. Per the above example, the nameserver hostnames ns1.yourname.com & ns2.yourname.com nameserver hostnames can now be used as vanity nameservers using the Realtime Register Premium DNS-services

Important

Make sure you allow for enough time for the newly created hostnames and host objects to be visible in the DNS. A quick search on one of the many DNS-tools available in your internet browser is good practice to check if the newly created nameserver hosts are fully active prior to using the newly created nameserver hostnames & objects as Vanity nameservers in the Realtime Register Premium DNS-services

In case you're not sure if everything is setup correctly, you can always send an email to our support department to double check.
