NIS2 - Extended Contact Validation + annual data review

Overview

To meet updated compliance requirements, we are introducing two measures for a set of ccTLDs:

  1. Contact Validation (email confirmation for domain holder email addresses)
  2. Annual Data Review (WDRP-like reminder) (yearly request to confirm/correct registration data)

These changes improve the accuracy and reliability of registration contact data and may be required by registry/registry-channel compliance rules.

What’s changing

1) Contact Validation (email confirmation)

What happens

  • When a domain holder email address is added for the first time, the domain holder receives a confirmation email.
  • The email address is marked as validated once the holder confirms it.
  • If the holder does not confirm after reminders/follow-ups:
    • The contact stays unvalidated
    • Some actions (especially contact/holder changes) may be delayed until the email is corrected and/or validated.

What you need to do

  • Make sure the domain holder email address is correct and accessible.
  • Ask the holder to check spam/junk folders if they don’t see the confirmation email.
  • If the address is wrong, update it and resend the confirmation request.

2) Annual Data Review (WDRP-like reminder)

What happens

  • Once per year, domain holders receive a request to review their stored registration data (for example: name/organization, address, email, phone where applicable).
  • The holder is asked to confirm the data or submit corrections.

What you need to do

  • Keep holder/contact data up to date throughout the year.
  • If a holder reports incorrect data, update it promptly so the record remains compliant.

What will happen to my domains?

New registrations / newly added holder emails

  • Contact Validation triggers when a holder email is introduced for the first time.

Existing domains

  • Domain holders will be included in the annual data review cycle.
  • If a holder email has never been validated, it may be flagged for validation during future lifecycle events (for example: contact updates), depending on how enforcement is applied.

Does this impact DNS, nameservers, or website uptime?

No. These measures only affect registration contact data workflows (email confirmation and yearly data review). DNS and hosting are not impacted.

What do I need to do as a reseller?

You should prepare for two things:

  1. Contact Validation emails will be sent to your customer (registrant) when a holder email is introduced for the first time.
  2. WDRP (WHOIS Data Accuracy Reminder) emails may be sent annually asking the registrant to confirm/correct their data.

To avoid confusion and reduce support load, ensure your reseller configuration is correct:

  • Branding (recommended / required for clarity)
Make sure your brand settings are up to date so emails are recognizable to your customers: read more
  • Customize the WDRP email template (recommended)
Adjust the content so it matches your tone of voice and support process: read more
